When we were younger, we used to run around outside and play all day, constantly using our imaginations, or at least I know I did. The first piece of “technology” I had to call my own, was a nano baby, something like a tamagotchi, just the knock off of it. I carried it everywhere it never left my side, for months and months, even on and off through the years the thing constantly had my attention.
You might be thinking why is Lyndsay telling me this, good question. After reading “Digital Devices Deprive Our Brain of Needed Down Time,” it made me realize that my nano baby was like an earlier version of my cell phone. I obviously didn’t use it to stay connected to people, but I used it to fill every gap of my free time when I was bored, I got addicted to it. I believe my nano baby was one of the turning points in the technological tidal wave.
The generation behind us spent all of their time outside running around, and they spent rainy days inside building forts and playing board games. The generation after us is addicted to computers, video games and cell phones rain or shine. That leaves us somewhere in the middle, we are half dependant on technology, yet we still know how to live with out it.
Reading this article made me a bit worried to be completely honest. Technology is slowly frying our brains because it doesn’t allow for us to have any down time. I don’t know about you, but that sort of makes me want to break away from it and give my self some space to kick back to the early nineties. Spending all my time outside playing and sometimes literally just sitting on the top of my tree house thinking.
Our generation could certainly back off and give our brains some down time, and the generations before us all could easily too, we know how to enjoy life without a cell phone glued to our side. But the generations that are now coming after us can’t. They don’t really know much out side of technology, and they are constantly on the go, so it really makes me wonder, how are they going to turn out?

In my wellness class today, my professor was telling us to leave our cell phones off for 24 hours and see how things go. I think it might be something worth trying.
